If crocodiles could fly, we’d all be in big trouble. 🙂
Yesterday as we journeyed from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio, our bus driver dropped us off so that we could walk across the bridge over the Tarcoles River. Our tour guide promised us that we were going to see monstrous crocodiles lurking on the mud banks below. (click on any photo to enlarge.)
Sure enough, as we peered over the rail of the bridge, there they were, all lined up ready for a photo shoot.
These American crocodiles, can grow up to 18 feet long.
Apparently, the water of this river is so polluted, that no fish can live in it, so what do these huge predators eat? Maybe they’re waiting for a couple of tourists to fall off the bridge. Well, they certainly weren’t going to get me.
Just look at the size of those feet!
After waving goodbye to these prehistoric looking creatures, we boarded our bus to the nearby resort town of Jaco, where we were to stop for lunch. The weather was scorching hot, and being a Sunday, the place was very busy. We sat in the shade of a cafe, eating chocolate ice cream sundaes and watching the world go by. The allocated two and a half hours really dragged by, and when we gratefully got back on the coach again, it was to be told that the air conditioning had stopped working. Not good news at all, but we all made the best of a bad job, opened a few windows, and headed for Manuel Antonio, where we are to spend three nights. The San Bada hotel is brand new and is situated right next to the beach, and right outside the gate to the Manuel Antonio National Park entrance, which we are due to visit on Tuesday.
Sitting out on our balcony, we witnessed a really memorable sunset,
and it got even more spectacular,
as the fiery ball gradually slid down behind a small island offshore.
until it finally disappeared from view.
Today, we’re going to explore the town, hang out by the pool and spend some time walking along the beach. Hope your week is a good one.
We had a blast in the Monteverde Rain Forest. This is where we zip-lined through the canopy. 🙂
That must have been a lot of fun. We were a bit more sedate, and did the hanging bridges, but some of the younger members of our group did the zip-lining. 🙂
We did the hanging bridges also and loved them. 🙂
The only drawback was that it rained the whole day.
yay! What scary looking creatures. Good things they don’t have wings. 🙂
Yes, I agree with you, Imelda. 🙂
….but you have loads of alligators in Florida to put you in the mood! 🙂
Hahaha. I like to keep my distance though. 🙂
I bet you do!
AnElephantCant forget how he got his trunk, so he is very wary of crocotoshodillies!
😆 Very wise indeed!
I don’t think flying crocks is such a good idea…. *chills*
Sorry to have put the idea into your head. 🙂
I won’t tell them what you said, adee. We don’t want to upset them, do we? 😀
Thinking about crocks under my bed just got into a whole new dimension! :-S
I always think they look quite peculiar with their long, pointy snouts!
I won’t tell them what you said, adee. We don’t want to upset them, do we? 😀
An exciting fun adventure! Crocs can run fast, swim faster and probably fly the fastest if they could. Then I’ll be zooming away scared! Awesome sunset!
Thanks, IT. Crocs could rule the world if they could fly. 😯
immagini incredibili, da restare senza fiato!
i coccodrilli sono impressionanti, ma le foto dei tramonti le ho amate moltissimo!
continua ad avere una bellissima vacanza
amazing pictures, remain breathless!
crocodiles are impressive, but the sunset picture I love it!
continue to have a wonderful holiday
Thanks, ventis. I’m so glad that you enjoyed the sunset pics, not forgetting the mighty crocs too. 😀
Somehow I think you might have the edge on me as far as having a wonderful week goes. After all you’re holidaying, feeding crocodiles (just kidding) and seeing spectacular scenery. Gee whizz and I’m just working for now. Oh but that sunset is stunning. It’s made my dull day all the more special somehow.
Thanks so much for your lovely comment. Michelle/ Glad I can keep you entertained and brighten up your working day. 🙂
Nice photos. The last two of the sunset are especially nice. The ice cream also sounds good. I’ve been craving chocolate. 🙂
Thanks, Pat. Yes, that ice cream went down very well on such a scorching hot day. 🙂
I don’t think I’ve had many ice creams that didn’t go down easy. 😀
Yes, me too. 🙂
the crocs lined up for photo op! lol
the sunet was magical!!!
Thanks, Lola. Those crocs were quite awesome. 🙂
I don’t think I’ll be going for an all over mud pack any day soon 😉
What a sunset Sylvia – most beautiful .
Thanks, Poppy. I’m sure you need a mud pack. 🙂
Indeed a spectacular sunset AD!
Even if there are no fish in the river, those crocs look quite well fed!
Yes they do look quite well stuffed, don’t they? 😀
awesome photos of the crocs!!! I’ve only seen an alligator twice on my travels to Florida and it awesome! What gorgeous sunset…it must have felt wonderful to witness such beauty…enjoy yourself on the beach!
Thanks so much, Heather. Yes, we once had a 9 ft alligator in our backyard in Florida, but these crocs were so much bigger. 😯
The sunset is indeed very beautiful, the perfect way to smooth out any memories of the ancient predators, lurking and waiting for tourist food, hehehe.
Thanks, Marion. Love your comment. 🙂
I’m glad that don’t fly! And I just had to find a quote about crocodiles to go with this fabulous post.
“Crocodiles are easy,’ Steve said. ‘They try to kill and eat you. People are harder. Sometimes they pretend to be your friend first.” Terri Irwin, Steve & Me
Thanks so much for the crocodile quote, Rebecca. I like it. 🙂
🙂 🙂 🙂
Stunning pics Sylvia. Those crocs are awesome and the sunset photo’s are amazing! Thanks for sharing and have fun! 😀 *big hugs*
Thanks so much, Sonel. 🙂 Hugs back to you too. xx
You’re welcome hon and I must say, I am very glad that Crocs can not fly..hahaha
Seems like you are having an interesting and exciting trip Sylvia, enjoy and thanks for sharing!
Regards
GAIL
Thanks, Gail. Yes, it’s certainly very interesting. 🙂
Fantastic capturing, adin. I love these photos including the sunsets too. Yes we will be in big trouble, if they perch on the roof we have to be prepared to face anything would happen 😦
Hehehe. Yes, I wouldn’t like to have a croc perched on my roof. 😯
😀
I´m so glad that we don´t have these Crocs here in Sweden … They are really big, i must say …
Your photo serie in this post is absolutely gorgeous !! … // Maria 🙂
Thanks so much, Maria. 🙂
Wow that was a great sunset!
Yes it was, Chris. They don’t come much better than that. 🙂
Apparently the mud bath is doing nothing for the skin on those crocs, but good shots. Keep your distance.
The sun shots are stunning! That must be as close to heaven as we can get on earth.
No, I don’t think the mud is good for the skin texture at all. 😦 Glad you loved my sunset shots, Gemma. 🙂
Well – thems crocs must have tough innards to live in those waters.
The sunset is beyond beautiful. What a sight that must have been to catch in person.
Pura Vida!
Thanks so much, RoSy. It’s definitely ‘Pura Vida’ all the way
Wow those crocs are huge!
Yes, I think they would eat Mr A for breakfast. 😀
I would not like flyable crocs or even any ability to jump far at all. They would be formidable predator :[
The sunset scene is so beautiful.
Thanks, YC. Yes, I’d definitely be against giving flying lessons to crocs. 🙂
LoL 🙂 now that raises a question. Are you a pilot?
Me a pilot? 😀 I’d rather not.
I’m pleased to hear the windows opened in the bus when the air con failed. Quite often those modern buses have sealed windows.
This was not the very modern luxury coach we’d had previously, but a much smaller bus, as only 16 of our tour group were carrying on down to the Pacific coast. I wasn’t very impressed, as it was a 4 hour journey along very bumpy roads. 😦
So beautiful! I’ve always wanted to visit this park!
Thanks, Nicole. I’m really looking forward to the park visit. 🙂
Crocs I can live without, Ad, but oh, those sunsets! 🙂
I’m with you, Jo. 🙂
Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Although how do those ‘gators get so big if there are no fish in the water?!
Thanks so much. I think the alligators eat the farmers’ livestock, including pets, so best keep Mr Ted E Bear away from there. 😯
NOOOO! Mr. Bear will now never be leaving our mini manse!
Hahaha 😀
Fab shots! I wouldn’t step on that bridge with these expectant beasts grinning below Sylvia!!!
Thanks, Madhu. The bridge was quite high up, so I think I was sort of safe. 🙂
The crocs are cool, but I love your sunset photos!
Thanks so much. 🙂
Scary critters, gorgeous sunset! Thanks for keeping us posted, Sylvia!
Thanks, Naomi. Glad you enjoy my adventures as I do yours. 🙂
Beautiful Sunset shots Sylvia! 🙂
Thanks so much, Adrian. 🙂
Those crocs are hideous beasties! A spectacular sunset though 🙂
Thanks, Gilly. Hideous is a very good description. 🙂
Beautiful sunset… and don’t fall in those crocs look hungry…
Thanks, bulldog. No worries…..I was holding onto the railings, but careful not to lean against them, just in case. 😯
Amazing sunset…
Scary Crocs 🙂
Thanks, Hopestar. 🙂
The sunsets photos are incredibly beautiful. The colors created a paiting of magical proportions.
The croc … he’s not so beautiful. But, he’s very photogenic. hahaha
Yes, nature paints the very best pics ever, but I have never seen a ‘beautiful’ croc 😀
hahaha .. neither have I.
Flying crocodiles !! Have they been feeding you wacky leaves in your hotel salad Sylvia ? hehe 😉 Oh. A Christmas carol for you called Jungle Belles 😉 xox
Hahaha….’Jungle Belles’ is brilliant. 😀
Wow
😯
Beautiful sunsets!
Thanks so much for your comment. 🙂
Don’t fancy these crocs much to be honest AD, but I suppose they have their place in the food chain, just as long as I’m not beneath them 😉
Was suprised to hear that you have hung up your hammock but as it’s to take us on more adventures it’s all good. Have been catching up with your previous posts and armchair (well office chair, if I’m honest) travelling thanks to your marvellous pics. Your current trip sounds really exciting – enjoy 🙂
Thanks for re-following me, optie. I’m glad you enjoy coming with me on my travels. 🙂
Wow, they are terrifying! Great photos.
Thanks, TBM. Terrifying indeed. 😯
Fantastic pics, as always!
Male crocodiles are actually humans’ best friend. The female crocodile lays 2000 eggs in a hole, covers them, and leaves. Then the male comes, opens the hole, eats about 1953 of the eggs so only a few hatch. If he did not do that we would be covered in crocs up to our necks!
Oh my golly goodness!! Thank goodness for the male crocs, although if it weren’t for them there wouldn’t be any eggs in the first place. 😀
Then there wouldn’t be any crocodiles and we’d be stung to death by mosquitoes!. The crocs eat barbels, barbels eat carp and carp eat mossie eggs. Take away the crocs and barbels proliferate eating all the carp and we are left with . . . . . . mosquitoes!
We were also told about bats here that eat over 2,000 mosquitoes a night! I think bats are our friends too. 🙂
I sure am glad they don’t [fly]!!!!! Happy December, Sylvia! 🙂
Me too, Marina. Happy December to you too. 🙂 xx
