If crocs could fly…….

If crocodiles could fly,  we’d all be in big trouble. 🙂

Yesterday as we journeyed from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio, our bus driver dropped us off so that we could walk across the bridge over the Tarcoles River. Our tour guide promised us that we were going to see monstrous crocodiles lurking on the mud banks below. (click on any photo to enlarge.)

Sure enough, as we peered over the rail of the bridge, there they were, all lined up ready for a photo shoot.

These American crocodiles, can grow up to 18 feet long.

Apparently, the water  of this river is so polluted, that no fish can live in it, so what do these huge predators eat? Maybe they’re waiting for a couple of tourists to fall off the bridge. Well, they certainly weren’t going to get me.

Just look at the size of those feet!

After waving goodbye to these prehistoric looking creatures, we boarded our bus to the nearby resort town of Jaco, where we were to stop for lunch. The weather was scorching hot, and being a Sunday, the place was very busy. We sat in the shade of a cafe, eating chocolate ice cream sundaes and watching the world go by. The allocated two and a half hours really dragged by, and when we gratefully got back on the coach again, it was to be told that the air conditioning had stopped working. Not good news at all, but we all made the best of a bad job, opened a few windows, and headed for Manuel Antonio, where we are to spend three nights. The San Bada hotel is brand new and is situated right next to the beach, and right outside the gate to the Manuel Antonio National Park entrance, which we are due to visit on Tuesday.

Sitting out on our balcony, we witnessed a really memorable sunset,

and it got even more spectacular,

as the fiery ball gradually slid down behind a small island offshore.

until it finally disappeared from view.

Today, we’re  going to explore the town, hang out by the pool and spend some time walking along the beach. Hope your week is a good one.

  2. Somehow I think you might have the edge on me as far as having a wonderful week goes. After all you’re holidaying, feeding crocodiles (just kidding) and seeing spectacular scenery. Gee whizz and I’m just working for now. Oh but that sunset is stunning. It’s made my dull day all the more special somehow.

  3. awesome photos of the crocs!!! I’ve only seen an alligator twice on my travels to Florida and it awesome! What gorgeous sunset…it must have felt wonderful to witness such beauty…enjoy yourself on the beach!

  4. I’m glad that don’t fly! And I just had to find a quote about crocodiles to go with this fabulous post.

“Crocodiles are easy,’ Steve said. ‘They try to kill and eat you. People are harder. Sometimes they pretend to be your friend first.” Terri Irwin, Steve & Me

  5. Stunning pics Sylvia. Those crocs are awesome and the sunset photo’s are amazing! Thanks for sharing and have fun! 😀 *big hugs*

  6. I´m so glad that we don´t have these Crocs here in Sweden … They are really big, i must say …
Your photo serie in this post is absolutely gorgeous !! … // Maria 🙂

  7. Well – thems crocs must have tough innards to live in those waters.

The sunset is beyond beautiful. What a sight that must have been to catch in person.

    Pura Vida!

    • This was not the very modern luxury coach we’d had previously, but a much smaller bus, as only 16 of our tour group were carrying on down to the Pacific coast. I wasn’t very impressed, as it was a 4 hour journey along very bumpy roads. 😦

  8. Flying crocodiles !! Have they been feeding you wacky leaves in your hotel salad Sylvia ? hehe 😉 Oh. A Christmas carol for you called Jungle Belles 😉 xox

  9. Don’t fancy these crocs much to be honest AD, but I suppose they have their place in the food chain, just as long as I’m not beneath them 😉
Was suprised to hear that you have hung up your hammock but as it’s to take us on more adventures it’s all good. Have been catching up with your previous posts and armchair (well office chair, if I’m honest) travelling thanks to your marvellous pics. Your current trip sounds really exciting – enjoy 🙂

  10. Fantastic pics, as always!
Male crocodiles are actually humans’ best friend. The female crocodile lays 2000 eggs in a hole, covers them, and leaves. Then the male comes, opens the hole, eats about 1953 of the eggs so only a few hatch. If he did not do that we would be covered in crocs up to our necks!
