Ed’s Sunday Stills: Pesky Power Lines

Those power lines that invade your photos, and there’s nothing you can do to avoid giving them pride of place. For his Sunday Stills Challenge this week, Ed has asked us to show him some of these pesky visual pollutants that have so often stood in the way of the perfect shot. I think Phuket in Thailand must certainly be a contender for first prize, with its prolific mess of ugly power lines, which tend to ruin every shot one takes. Thanks Ed for giving me a chance to use these photos. 🙂 (Click on any image to see the bigger picture.)

These pics were taken in 2012, and I read that there’s now a project underway to clean up the tangle of electrical cables which festoon the streets. Apparently they were quite dangerous, as the electrical systems weren’t always properly grounded, and electric shock is a distinct possibility for unwary pedestrians who may come into contact with an exposed outlet. In the wet season, someone could easily be electrocuted by stepping into a puddle which had a live wire dangling in it. The occurrence of a few such fatal incidents, has prompted the authorities to do something about it. One really has to ask oneself how it could have got so bad, without anyone noticing. They must have very untidy electricians there.

  1. this post was so culturally rich – enjoys fit much and love the “untidy” electricians – makes me grateful to live in a place where there are codes enforced – my my – the things we take for granted.

  2. I’ve often wondered why they don’t bury the lines, but I understand that would made repairs more difficult when needed. They sure are a nuisance though. Good challenge to use up these frustrating shots though!

  3. Now you sure you’ve not been photoshopping Sylvia … after all somewhere in cyberland there must be a discarded heap as high as Everest 🙂

  4. It is such a pity that photos can be spoilt by these lines… I have taken so many photos in Rietvlei Dam Reserve only to get home and see a perfect photo of an Eland or the like, is spoilt by the power lines that criss cross the reserve… and these are not the small type but these great huge pylons that are so hard not to miss…

  5. This makes me think of maintenance nightmare for those who have to add/remove/reconnect one of the circuit in there. Just think of it with the picture in mind, I already have big knots in mind 🙂

  6. It’s good to know there’s a clean up on the way, though these don’t look quite so DIY as the power milked poles in Marie’s Delhi shot! In fact, the top tangle looks more like an aerial footway, like Robin Hood between the buildings … Great to give these shots an airing Sylvia. 🙂
