“Knowledge is like a Lion; it cannot be gently embraced.” ~ South African proverb
Today Is World Lion Day. Here is one of these most majestic of creatures, seen at the ‘Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve’, set in the heart of the ‘Cradle of Humankind’ World Heritage Site, west of Johannesburg.
World Lion Day is:
“An independent campaign working to highlight the importance of the lion globally and to raise lion conservation awareness worldwide. “Saving the King of Beasts to Save Ourselves”
…The lion is an enduring symbol across the nations and has fascinated man throughout the millennia. To lose such a species would be to lose a significant part of our global heritage.”
as stated at the official ‘World Lion Day‘ campaign page.

“It’s better to be a lion for a day, than a sheep all your life.”
~ Elizabeth Kenny (An Australian nurse, whose principles of muscle rehabilitation became the foundation of physiotherapy.)
These animals are indeed majestic ! … And I just love your photo of this Jungle King // Maria 🙂
Thanks, Maria. He’s such a fine specimen. 🙂
Cheers to the tribute to the worthy king.
Thanks, Frank. 🙂
Definitely a majestic animal. sometimes I watch our semi-feral cats, the way they walk and stalk prey. Then I often think of the bigger cats who move the same way. Even though I’d like to see these big cats in their natural environment (one day…), I am still glad I don’t live in their environment and have to be afraid to become their dinner.
Oh yes, it must be absolutely terrifying to find oneself at the mercy of one of these big cats. I shudder to think of it. 😯
The most majestic pose. Perfect capture, Sylvia 🙂
Thanks so much, Inga. 🙂
He shows it, he is the king. Lion King 🙂 Stunning photo Sylvia.
Yes he does. Thanks so much. 🙂
What a majestic animal! Paula also had a wonderful lion post: http://bopaula.wordpress.com/2014/08/10/black-white-sunday-lion-heart/
Thanks, CG. I did visit and comment on Paula’s post. 🙂
This post reminded me of a story I read about two Australians who raised a lion in their London flat. It’s actually a very beautiful story.

Yes, I remember the story, and also that it had a beautiful ending. 🙂
Beautiful photo of lion. We need more animal days to remind people to same nature
Thanks, scrapydo. Yes, I think we should have more animal days, and less politician days. 🙂
Yes, I’ll vote for that. Here we are preparing for election in September and all is about how “good” the political party would be!!!!!!
“Long live the King” is good 😉 Great shot of the lion and than you for sharing the quotes! 🙂
Thanks so much, Dina. I’m so glad you enjoyed. 🙂
Majestic indeed! Great capture of the king of the jungle, Sylvia! 🙂
Thanks so much, Lola. 🙂
Handsome and majestic indeed. The lion is really deserved to be the king of the jungle 🙂
Thanks, Chris. Yes, he certainly does. 🙂
Yep, a majestic creature indeed. I’m surprised you didn’t have one of your sister’s paintings for the post.
I don’t think my sister has ever painted a lion, although I remember she did help a young African boy to paint one a couple of years ago. It’s a great pity he didn’t carry on with his art, as he had a lot of potential. http://blogs.24.com/anotherdayinparadise/2012/07/05/our-countrys-most-valuable-assets-are-our-children/
The Lion King indeed.
Isn’t he just? 🙂
I used to have a lion stuffed animal, it was one of the best stuffed animals that I ever had 🙂
I also have a small stuffed Leo the Lion. 🙂
Super!
Thanks so much, Marylou. 🙂
Super.
What a handsome specimen!! Long live the ‘king’! 🙂
Hear, hear, Madhu. 🙂
I’ve always been fascinated by lions, so majestic and with so much power.
So true Andy, and they’re beautiful too. 🙂
Absolutely 🙂
Fabulous creatures!
Absolutely fabulous, Cindy. 🙂
Their day indeed!!! 😉 Here’s to all lions and …leos!!! 🙂
Even the moon agrees! 🙂
I also agree, Marina. Lions rule! 🙂
Great post, I just did a bonus Sunday post for this special day….. 😉
Thanks, Ed. I did laugh at your post. 😀
What a stunning photo of this beautiful animal.
Thanks, Sue. He posed quite nicely, didn’t he. 🙂
What a great shot of a magnificent creature!
Thanks, Naomi. 🙂
Lovely picture
Thanks so much. 🙂
King of the Jungle!
Absolutely! We two Leos can’t help but love them. 🙂
I agree!
Majestic animals – the roar of a lion at night sends shivers down your spine! You have a lovely photo here Sylvia.
Thanks so much, Jude. He looks quite harmless, basking there in the sunshine, doesn’t he? 🙂
The message in the campaign page is interesting. It suggests that there are lion every where there (“as you pass through your homes, … daily lives, you stop and admire lions…”)? I like them but also afraid of them at the same time 🙂
I think the message is that they ARE all around us, as they have been used in heraldry and for statues and ornaments for many, many years. I don’t know where you live YC but maybe there is a lion somewhere closer to you than you think? I shall definitely keep my eye out for one… 🙂
I got it. Thanks 🙂
