Looking back and pressing forward

Happy New Year everyone. Here are a few of my memories of 2014. It was very difficult to choose just one photo from each month, but I hope you enjoy these.

In January we were here in Florida, and I was wearing my fingers to the bone for the concert that never happened. After all the time and energy spent learning the songs and practising endlessly with the cast, I was more than a little p’d off with the organisers.

In February, our 6 month visitors’ visa was up, so we had to say goodbye to our home here, and go back to South Africa.

One of the first things we did on our return, was to take a trip up to Johannesburg to see our daughter and family. It was our grandson’s 15th birthday, and we had an unforgettable evening at the ‘Madame Zingara’ dinner and show at Monte Casino. Here is a waiter whose image is forever etched in my memory.

In April, we went to my sister’s house for a delicious Easter lunch, and I provided the dessert, a decadent chocolate cheesecake complete with little bunnies, who all got eaten with not even a passing thought for their cuteness.

In May, our mom celebrated her 89th birthday, and my sister made a delicious chocolate cake to share with all the residents at the care home.

In June, hubby and I made a trip down the coast to meet up with my very longstanding blogger friend Kragenhai, and Cindy his gorgeous St Bernard.

In July, I had a birthday high tea at the Oyster Box Hotel, just up the road from our house.

In August, our daughter treated us to a luxurious weekend stay at the same hotel. It was fabulous to sit out on the balcony and watch the dolphins cavorting in the waves.

We returned to Florida in September, and it was so exciting to see the brand new roof  on the ‘abandoned house’ we’d bought earlier in the year. Hubby started the renovation work inside, that same week.

In October we took a flight up the New Jersey to see our son and his lovely family. One of the highlights was accompanying our little granddaughter on her school trip to the pumpkin farm.

In November, we brought home this exquisite orchid, which is still blooming profusely.

In December I decided to try my hand at painting, and joined an art class. It’s a six week course, and I still have two weeks to go.

This morning, we will start the New Year as we mean to go on. There’s a ‘New Year’s Day Master Class’ at our gym. At 10am we have Kick Boxing and Boot Camp, followed by Bokwa and Strength Conditioning, and rounded off with Abs and Core plus a bit of Yoga. Two and a half hours in all. How are you spending your first day of the year? Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2015.

  2. Happy New Year, Sylvia! What a wonderful review of 2014. And since I haven’t visited in a while I didn’t know about your painting. Looks like you have a talent for it! 😀

  3. Hi Sylvia ! … Thanks for a lovely review of 2014 … My favourite is the photo of you in July … At the Oyster Box Hotel …
I´m looking forward to follow your blog during 2015 …
Your blog is one of the few I regularly took time to follow during 2014 ( followed from my cell phone ) … Even if I didn’t always leave a comment …
Wish you all the best … Hugs to you from me ! … Maria 🙂

  4. Looking back at last year…I think it was a lovely one. I hope you get your permanent residence approved this year. I know your lovely painting will look wonderful when your new home is finished and it has a prominent place. Wishing you all the best in 2015.

  5. Loved the stroll down memory lane. I remember all the hi lites excepts for the waiter, Sylvia, who was more than happy to pose. Your exercise routine sounds daunting and a challenge to the rest of us. A toast to you for the New Year as you await the transition into your new home.

    • Hahaha. You must be the only one who is seeing my Borat-styled waiter for the first time. Lucky you! 😀 We really enjoyed the NYD workout and have Boot Camp to look forward to tomorrow. How quickly it seems to come around. 😯 Thanks so much for your good wishes. xx

  6. Beautiful post…loved pouring through the memories with you. The dolphin looked rather happy there. Delightful! That waiter was certainly…intriguing! Happy 2015 to you. Jubilant cheers,

  7. What a great round up of your year. Such an energetic and inspiring lady…I always love to hear what you and your lovely family are up to. You’ve just inspired me to look back through my 2014 images, thank you 🙂

  8. What a great year 2014 was for you, Sylvia. Oh my word, your painting is wonderful! You did that after four weeks? I could take classes for four years and my painting wouldn’t look as beautiful as yours. I’m thrilled to have discovered your blog! I see many familiar faces. 🙂 Happy New Year!

  9. I love this post as I remember each and every one and can’t believe it’s been a whole year! What a lovely round-up and sounds like you are definitely looking for a fit and healthy New Year Sylvia! I need to do the same, down and out with yet another cough and cold…not like me. Maybe I need to move to Florida, lol 😀 Looking forward to sharing another blogging year with you…and can’t wait to see your finished painting, although I love it as it is! Hugs to you dear friend…see you soon 🙂 xx

    • So sorry that you’re not feeling A1, Sherri. Yes, I think you do need a bit of Florida warmth and sunshine. I also can’t believe that a whole year has gone by since I was stressing about the concert music. 🙂

      • Ahh…thanks Sylvia, and yes, that sounds so wonderful…*sigh*. Yes, a whole year…I remember you going through that like it was yesterday!!!!

  10. What a whirlwind year it’s been. We started the day with a two hour yoga class, then after lunch went for a jaunt along the coast. This time of year the sun sets far too early so the hike had to be a relatively short one, but I couldn’t think of a better way to start the new year. Wishing you lots more great stuff for one-one-fifteen!

  11. What a lovely way to reflect on a past year. Beautiful times and memories. I had to laugh at your schedule today, oh my, you go girl! What a wimp I am!!

  12. A roller coaster of highs in the main this year Sylvia .. a lovely reflection on your life and family times . You sound full of energy and let’s go – what a great start to 2015 !
As for us , we enjoyed an al fresco picnic with some friends overlooking the Spanish coast . 16 degrees and clear blue skies. Quite happy with that 😉

  13. My favourite is the pumpkins shot, but oh that waiter, Ad! I didn’t know where to look 🙂 Did you make that chocolate cheesecake? Hoping 2015 is every bit as good for you.

  14. Well that;s one way to start the new year! No wonder you look like you do! And love the round-up, lots of fun and love with the family wherever they are. Are you now permanent in the US then Sylvia?

    • Thanks so much, Jude. Yes we did enjoy the workout. Our application for permanent residence is in process, and should take about 5 months. I don’t think we’re allowed to leave until it’s granted.

    • That sounds good, bulldog. I’m glad Linda had the day off. Hubby also gave himself a day off from the house renovations. We’ve submitted our request for permanent residence status and it’s in process. Could take up to 5 months to go through.

  15. You had a great and colorful year! Happy 2015 to you & yours! For me today is quiet after hosting a party yesterday, maybe a walk in the nature reserve later. Then grandkids for the weekend.

  16. A smashing year of blogging Sylvia! Enjoyed all your posts. As for your New Year’s Day, I think I’ll stick with mine.. some photo processing and a catch up with a blog or two.. 🙂

  17. What a great idea to wrap up the year with one commemorative photo for each month. And I commend you for Kicking your year into high gear with 2 1/2 hours at the gym. I don’t have anything that strenuous planned for today.

  18. Lovely times 🙂 Every photo was sweet,my favorites were the bday cupcake, pumpkin farm, painting class work, the cake, the residents, everything 🙂 Wishing you a very happy new year 😀
