When we were over in England earlier this year, we visited Sherwood Forest, the legendary haunt of Robin Hood and his band of merry men. Besides seeing the Major Oak, purported to be the outlaw’s secret hiding place, I came upon this carved tree trunk, which I think is perfect forΒ Nancy’s Photo a Week challenge ‘Wood’.

Quite fairy-tale-ish.
Yes, like old Rip Van Winkle. π
When we went there, we couldn’t find the forest. Thought it had been converted into a housing estate. Glad it still exists.
Hahaha. That’s sad that you went there and couldn’t find it. We also had a bit of difficulty, but persevered.
What have they filed it under?
Not sure, but you probably thought it had been stolen by outlaws. π
Or tucked away by a friar.
π
I’d get a big fright if I saw this while taking my dogs for their afternoon walk on the farm – but not if I was in Sherwood Forest π
Hahaha. He was harmless enough and looked so right standing there in the clearing. π
I think he’s awesome! π
Wonderful realization.
Thank you. π
You are welcome.
Oooo, I want one of those!
It would be an interesting addition to your garden. π
My dog would like it, if it deterred the “marauders” from entering her territory i.e. cats, foxes, and squirrels.
π
Wonderful wood carving It really looks as if it whispers its story.
Thanks so much. Yes, it has that magical quality. π
sembra proprio un vecchissimo spirito del bosco, che da un attimo all’altro possa animarsi e prendere vita! Speriamo possa proteggerci da tutti coloro che vogliono distruggere le foreste
π
Yes, an ancient tree spirit. I’m sure he’s watching over this ancient forest. He looks very wise. π
looks like a postbox of sorts
Yes, for the fairies. π

What a wonderful wooden sculpture – have a couple of times biked through the Sherwood Forest so fascinating where you can hear the stories whispering from the trees… π
Thanks, Drake. I so agree about the whispering trees. π
That’s a beautiful, and perfect, response to the challenge! What a nice place for the fairies to come and dance around the carved trunk.
Thanks, Helen. Yes, I’m sure they do just that when no-one is looking. π
Oh this is fantastic! I should love to have a conversation with that tree. π
Thanks, Sue. I’m sure it could tell a few stories. π
What a wonderful carving. Amazing!
Thanks, Lisa.
Amazing carving and great shot! Thanks for joining the challenge!
Thanks, Nancy. Always a pleasure. π
There is a little owl on the side near the bottom. There are also a couple of well cut rectangle wholes. I am wondering what does it mean and what the wholes are for.
Yes, the owl is cute. I think you can post your letters to Santa in the holes. π
Ah, thank you.
My pleasure. π
I love that carved work of art! All the photo needs is a band of Merry Men!
Thanks, Susie. Yes it does. π
What a beautiful artwork
Thanks, Marylou. π
I really love this sculpture, Sylvia. Though the tree is dead, it is still alive through the image of the man and the owl. Lovely.
Thanks, Marion. Yes, I so agree with you. π
Through your posts I’ve got to encounter a lot of places….Sherwood Forest , for instance….

Very cool photo. And such creativity someone had.
Thanks, Cee. π
I like what the creator has done, even the little owl tucked into the side. What do you think the cut outs were used for?
Thanks, Lynne. Yes itβs really well done. I think the cut outs are letterboxes for the fairies. π
