The Gothic styled Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg has the most fascinating clock I’ve ever seen. This eighteen metre high astronomical clock was completed in 1843 and is said to be extraordinarily accurate. This amazing clock does far more than tell the time, it also indicates solar time, with each day of the week being represented by a god of mythology. It also shows the month, the year, and the appropriate sign of the zodiac, as well as the phases of the moon and the position of several planets.
There are many sculpted figurines which move around at different hours of the day, and if you happen to be there at half past midday, you will see all these automatons go into operation and start doing their thing. At the top you can see the representation of Christ, and underneath is Death himself. Figurines representing the different stages of life; a child, a teenager, an adult and an old man, all pass in front of Death. Above this, the apostles walk before Christ, accompanied by the sound of beating wings and the crowing of a rooster. Did you ever see a more ornate timepiece?
In stark contrast is my kitchen clock which for some strange reason, the people who bought our house insisted that we leave behind. I’m quite fond of it, but if the sale of the house depended on them having the clock too, I wasn’t going to argue.
Hope you’re having a great Tuesday. I’ve packed quite a few boxes and taken down and wrapped my paintings. The house is looking quite bare already.

Wow!
Such an amazing clock. 🙂
Fascinating! Incredibly …..
I say more interesting than the more famous one in Prague.
Haven’t seen that one ………..yet. 😃
The Strasbourg clock certainly held my rapt attention, Sylvia. It is a shame that you were attached to your kitchen clock yet were asked to leave it. Hmmm. . . Hope your next home you may find a worthy replacement. Hope all is going splendidly, my dear friend. ♡
Thanks so much, Robin. Yes, all is going well. I’ll be back soon. 🙂
I must see that Strasbourg clock some day. It is Tuesday again, the day of the Mars 🙂
Yes you really should, Paula. I’d love to go back again for another look. 🙂
I am awed!
I was too, Cybele. 🙂
I saw this clock while visiting about ten years ago. It’s like nothing I have ever seen since. Impressive huh? Thanks for reminding me.
You’re welcome. 🙂
That is indeed quite a clock! Amazing. You don’t see anything made like this today.
Yes it is. 🙂
WOW…..I could stand and look at this kind of architectural artwork all day long. You can’t possibly see/absorb every little detail in just a look and move-on. The skills they had back then with none of the tooling we have today! Just stunning, thanks for sharing! 🙂
Thanks, Donna. Glad you enjoyed. 🙂
You captured gothic to modern perfectly Sylvia. I’ve seen a similar clock somewhere here in the UK, I want to say York Cathedral, but not sure. Hmmm…will have to try and remember! Strasbourg is a place I’ve always wanted to visit…one day! 🙂 xx
Thanks, Sherri. I haven’t been to York Cathedral. xx
Maybe next time you’re in England Sylvia, it’s a beautiful building 🙂 xx
My granddaughter is at York St. John University.
Ahh…then you will have the perfect opportunity during a visit, that’s wonderful!xx
We are capable of such amazing marvels like this, humans walked on the moon, so how is it that we can’t get food and water to everyone.
Yes, it’s one of life’s big mysteries, Charlie. Maybe there are just too many people. 😕
The buildings are just amazing!
Yes they are. 🙂
The Cathedral clock is amazing! Imagine the work that went into building it.
Some relatives of ours sold their house with the stipulation that they leave behind the master bedroom bedspread for the buyers. Strange indeed!
That’s also very odd. 🙂
Glad you’re making progress with the packing. I’m sure you feel as if time is in short supply.
Absolutely, Nancy. 😕
I like your clock, interesting that it had to stay with the new owners.
Thanks, Amy. Yes, I also like it. Hope I can get another one the same. 🙂
Wunderschön wünsche einen schönen Tag eine Umarmung Gislinde
Thanks so much, Gislinde. Hugs back to you. 🙂 xx
Amazing
Thanks, Derrick. 🙂
This is also particularly and unique, mooie photos Sylvia!
Thanks so much, DellaAnna. 🙂
What an amazing clock….just like a history lesson….thanks for taking time out in between packing (something I hate doing!)
Thanks, Gerrie. Glad you enjoyed. 🙂
It always amazes me when Christian churches have mythological and astrological symbols, it doesn’t make sense if you think about it!
Oh yes, I so agree with you Gilly. 😀
The clock does so many things perhaps it makes dinner too? 🙂 glad to hear the packing is going well.
Thanks, Sue. Yes, it’s not going too badly, but now I have to prepare for the family coming, and so can’t pack all that I would wish too. 😕
Very Nice n wonderful Shot……!
Thanks, Vikey. 🙂
Both are lovely timepieces in their own way. Yours is a lot easier to dust!
Thanks o much. Not that I dust mine that often. It’s a bit high up. 🙂
I can only imagine the hours and hours of dedicated workmenship that went into that intricate clock!
Yes, you’re right about that. It’s a real masterpiece.
What an amazing clock- really a structure! Glad to hear the packing is progressing!
Thanks Lisa. 😃
My wife and I are in the process of moving too. What a drag! I’m impressed with that clock though!
Yes it’s quite a thing and we have our son and his wife + 3 small grandchildren arriving to stay for four nights, leaving the day before we have to move out. We’re also moving into our half renovated house. 😅
Exactly so, Jude. I have feeling that they wanted it left up because neither of them was fit enough to cling up a ladder to put a new one there. I’m sure they are probably younger than us, but actually they looked older and wider. 😅
hee hee…
I imagine that would be fascinating to see the clock works. I would hope that last for a little while.
Your clock although looks much simpler but I can understand why people wants it. It looks very attractive and I like that it has the hygrometer and the thermometer. They are nice to have.
Yes it was fascinating to watch, YC. I love our kitchen clock too, but I suppose I’ll have to choose a new one. 😳
Best wishes with your packing Sylvia – you are fast! Love the Gothic clock on the Cathedral – beautiful design and history behind it.
Thanks Mary. I do have my moments. 😄
You got a lot done today!
I could have done more if I wasn’t blogging and watching the birds.,😃
LOL!
What a beautiful clock, Sylvia. I can understand why the buyer asked for it to convey with the home. Is it a large clock?
Thanks Jill. I guess it’s about 18 inches across.
Just lovely S-
Thanks, Cheryl.

The Gothic clock is wonderful, Sylvia. They were such clever people to build it (what happened to all the great architects? Maybe the cost of these beautiful things eventually got in the way).
Best of luck with the move and also the 87 sheets of dry wall! Yikes 😉
Thanks Dianne. Yes, times change and skills sadly get lost along the way. I’m sure it could be designed on a computer these days. I really don’t envy hubby all that work, but he’s not fazed at all. 😃
Clocks are one of my very favourite things and this one goes way beyond! Love that. I was going to suggest you just have them ship this one over to you, but thinking again…it’s now been done….you’re going to have to find something new to grace your new kitchen wall!
Yes, I think it might be just a tad on the large side for my kitchen, Torrie. 😄
We saw a clock in Rouen, France which told all the lunar and solar movements as well as the seasons. Aren’t they fascinating time pieces. This clock is very ornate. I’m guessing it was designed to educate people who couldn’t read. How strange that you would have to leave your clock behind. It’s not a fixture like an oven or a bathtub.
Beautiful architecture
I agree, Marylou. Absolutely stunning.
I think your new kitchen clock should be a replica of the Gothic clock. 🙂
No problem, Kate. I’ll get hubby to build one, after all, he has nothing else to keep him busy, apart from the 87 sheets of dry wall which arrived today. 😅
hehehehehe 🙂
Though you ex kitchen-clock was beautiful , you did the right thing leaving it behind to please the buyers……….
The gothic clock is such a stunning sculpture! Thanks for this superb share!
Thanks, Anna. I’ll just have to find another clock. I’m happy you enjoyed the Gothic clock. 🙂
I love that Gothic clock! wow intricate indeed 🙂
Thanks, Andy. 🙂
