For this week’s Photo Challenge, Cheri says “Get inspired by the curves around you. From curves in architecture to bends in nature to man-made undulations.”
I think the most impressive curved piece of architecture I’ve ever seen, is the Colosseum in Rome. Opened in AD 80, it was the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire, and for many years was the site of gory combats between man and beast.
Not too far away from the Colosseum, in the heart of the Vatican City, is the curved dome of St Peter’s Basilica, designed by Michelangelo and completed in 1590, twenty-six years after his death. This is the largest dome of Christianity in the world, being 136m high and 42 m in diameter.
Not to be outdone, today hubby is busy spackling his dome, which is nowhere near as big or fancy as Michelangelo’s, but a lot of work nevertheless. I hope it doesn’t take 44 years to complete.
In Barcelona are many examples of the gorgeously curvy architecture of Antoni Gaudi. In 1984, La Padrera one of Gaudí’s main residential buildings which has to be one of the most imaginative houses in the history of architecture, was recognised by UNESCO, as World Heritage
Man has designed beautiful curves, but Mother Nature really does have the best curves of all, and here is a beautiful curve of a rainbow at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
My post wouldn’t be complete without a couple of my Backyardigans, Tommy and Theresa the painted turtles, with their perfectly curved homes which they carry around on their backs.
I hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend. Tomorrow I’ll have to prise hubby away from his work on the house, and take him out for a Father’s Day dinner.
Absolutely beautiful. Italy has some of the most magnificent architecture no doubt, and your husband also rose to the challenge! Wonderful post and photos Sylvia, love them all.
Thanks so much, Miriam. 🙂
anotherdayinparadise Classics! I love it!
YES!! Amongst my favorite curves! 🙂
Dajena 🙂
What a fantastic array of photos for the ‘Curved’ theme Sylvia. I love your ingenuinity! I remember my middle boy telling me about the amazing architecture in Barcelona when he visited on a school trip as part of his A Level Geography course. I’ve yet to visit mainland Spain believe it or not! And I do hope it won’t take your hubby 44 years to finish his dome otherwise you’ll never get your new kitchen 😉 xx
Oh yes, me too, Sherri. I’m so dying to get my kitchen finished. Now we’ve been told that a couple of the appliances which we chose, aren’t available. They’re on back-order, so who knows when they will arrive? 😕 We did a tour of Spain and Morocco, and it was absolutely fabulous. I’m sure you’ll get there one day. xx
Oh that’s annoying. I hope not too long a wait… I would love to go to Morocco too Sylvia. It’s on the ever-growing list!! xx
Reblogged this on Unmeasured Journeys and commented:
Don’t you just love how the visual aspects of a particular word can be different depending on someone’s experiences?
Take the word “curve”. When I think of curve, in my mind, I picture the windy road I live on, the roundness of my son’s trampoline, and the edges of a butterfly’s wings.
I saw this post on one of my favorite blogs, and I love it because of all the ways “curve” relates to her life. I thought it’d be fun to share it. Thank you, Sylvia for letting me!
Thanks so much for the reblog and the lovely comment, Jessica. xx 🙂
You’re welcome! 💜
🙂
Your comment made me smile. Marilyn Monroe had nothing on the curvaceous Colosseum. 🙂 I love the dome which hubby has made. Now we just have to decide on what colour to paint it. 😕
I love the curves – and especially Gaudi who never fails to delight me with his unique architecture 🙂
Thanks, Joanne. Yes, I so agree with you about Gaudi. He was a genius.
beautiful gallery of curves, Sylvia! the turtles have great curves 🙂 but your dome tops my list. 🙂
Thanks so much, Lola. I’ll tell hubby. 🙂
a wonderful gallery of curves.!! I love that building in Barcelona!
Thanks, Cybele. 🙂
Some of the most beautiful curves, Sylvia! I do love Gaudi…but also hubby’s great task there…and those two curved homes are very well made too.
Thanks, Ann Christine. So glad you enjoyed all of these. 🙂
Beautiful curves, Sylvia! I have and loved seen four of them, and love your hubby’s work and your backyard visitors as well! I’m sure his ceiling will take only 44 hours to complete 🙂 Full of admiration ❤
Thanks so much, Helen. Hubby is smiling. 🙂
Wonderful photos! I’m looking forward to visiting Barcelona in August and Gaudi’s La Padrera is on my must-have list.
That sounds very exciting, Regina. You will absolutely love it. 🙂
All great shots and perfectly matched to the themes!
Thanks, Mary. 🙂
Unusually, I’ve actually visited some of the places you mentioned in your post this time! My wife and I went on honeymoon to Rome, you see. The other beautiful curves I remember from the city were those of the Pantheon — a building in truly spectacular condition given its age. 🙂
all perfect examples of curves. The ceiling is looking very impressive.
Thanks, Pauline. Yes it’s coming along nicely. 🙂
An excellent selection
Thanks, Derrick. Glad you enjoyed. 🙂
great
Thank you. 🙂
in most of the man made curves one recognizes mother nature, human secondary sexual characteristics: breasts, Phallus…
that is our world. I dont know of what hubby is thinking doing his work at his dome….
Have a nice Father’s Day together.
Thanks so much, Anand. I think that hubby is just thinking that he can’t wait until he’s finished with the work, and he can stand back and breathe sigh of relief. 🙂
Great photos, nice to see the Vatican dome which we saw a few weeks ago, it is just stunning. ( I think your hubby is doing a pretty good imitation! ) I always love to the see Vic Falls with its rainbow…aren’t we lucky to have seen that lovely place?
Yes we are indeed, Gerrie. We’re both very lucky to have been able to travel so much. 🙂
Wonderful choice of pictures!
Thanks so much. 🙂
Well I think Hubby’s dome is my top pick Sylvia. What an ultimate makeover. Have a good day celebrating tomorrow.
Thanks so much, Sue. Wish Dave a happy Father’s Day from us. 🙂
He says thanks so much!
Duuuuude these are some great curves!
Thanks so much, TG. 🙂
Awe, love the painted turtles. Great that you included them in the curves challenge 🙂
They’re so cute. 😍
I hope hubby has a wonderful Father’s Day, Sylvia. I love the dome he’s working on and my second favourite is the rainbow – a true curve of nature 😀
Thanks so much, Dianne. Yes, the domed ceiling is looking good. Maybe we should paint it with rainbow paint. 😅
These are all beautiful photographs of curves.
Your hubby is creating some wonderful architectural designs. He’s very talented. My hubby is painting our master bedroom. The chaos is a bit much for me. I give you both a lot of kudos for being able to get through this major work that will soon be art.
Have a WONDERFUL SUNDAY …
Isadora 😎
Thanks, Issy. I’m learning a lesson in patience, for sure. At least we weren’t living here when hubby was painting our bedroom. 🙂
Nice variety of curves.
Thanks, Patti. 😃
I really love this. Would you mind if I reblog it?
I would be delighted, Jessica. 😘
Yay!!!! Thank you! 💜
You have a wonderful artistic eye and I love how you showcase historic architecture and your modern day life together. Your husband at work on the dome, is icing on the cake. Can you even imagine how much you’re going to love your house when it’s finished? Beautiful post! 🙂
Thanks so much, Jessica. Yes, I know the house is going to be wonderful when it’s finished. 🙂
Can’t wait until you post pictures!
Wonderful gallery!
Thanks, Dawn. 😘
The padrera house is my fav of the post !
And is that dome your hubs is working on – is that in your new house???
Thanks, Yvette. Yes this is the ‘abandoned ‘ house we bought a couple of years ago. We’ve been living in it since February.
Well I just read the piano post and got the answer!! Ahhhh
Looking good S! 💕☀️
Your dome will be quite spectacular I’m sure. Enough work has gone into it to render it World Heritage status too. Then we could all come and visit!
Haha I just read your comment to hubby and he laughed . 😄
He could charge a small fee for us to come and look up! Or perhaps we could bring an offering. Maybe he would enjoy some good Aussie wine…
Yes, and I could play a few tunes on the piano and we could have a very jolly time with all that wine. I’m warming to the idea. 😅
Before we know it, there will a party going on. Maybe I could organise Mr ET to bring some of his famous home brew.
Sounds amazing!! 😅
All the best to your husband to finishing painting the dome with a couple of weeks. 🙂 Those are beautiful photos – I could not believe how complicated and massive the Colosseum is when I visited a while back. Your game park yard of a garden has such a variety of wildlife! You are lucky
Thanks so much. He’s getting on really well with everything. Yes, I agree with you about the Colosseum. It’s absolutely massive. I love all my little critters who come to visit here. 😍
I also enjoyed looking at the inside of the “domed” Pantheon in Rome.
Yes, it’s really beautiful. I almost posted a photo of it as well. 🙂
I’m glad your hubby is able to stand to spackle . . . imagine lying flat on one’s back to paint the Sistine Chapel, etc.
Enjoyed your pics.
I know, right? I’ve offered my sister the job of painting a picture on it, but she’s not biting. 🙂
Haha! Imagine that.
Maybe you could apply a painting or photograph like a decal?
Haha I’m not sure what plans hubby has for it. He was talking about painting it midnight blue with gold stars, but I think that’s a ‘bit over the top’………excuse the pun. 😀
A nice tour of the ‘curved world’ here, Sylvia… I like the building in Barcelona – very unusual. Great photos!
Thanks, Tom. Yes, I really love Gaudi’s eccentric architecture. 🙂
Your “curve” is so varied and nice!
From Rome to the turtles….just beautiful!
(Thumbs up for hubby!)
Thanks so much, Anna. 🙂
Gorgeous pictures of man made curves and nature made especially the rainbow curve. That is an awesome capture. Tommy and Theresa ‘s curves are good match together 🙂
Thanks, YC. Yes, I think that Tommy and Theresa were made for one another. 🙂
Oh did you go inside the Pedrera Sylvia, if so was it worth it?
Yes it was worth it. I think I posted photos of me on the roof a couple of years back, and you remarked that you felt it should be inhabited by Hobbits, but that I fitted in there quite well. 😀
A beautiful, eclectic gallery, Sylvia. Have a great weekend.
janet
Thanks so much, Janet. 🙂
Wow! These are incredible photographs, Sylvia! Glad to hear hubby gets a little break tomorrow. 🙂 Love the turtles! xo
Thanks, Jill. I hope he’ll take a break. 🙂
Beautiful architecture And good idee to take your husband out for fatherday.
Thanks, Marylou. 🙂
Great set of Curve images, Sylvia….
Thanks, Sue.
All impressing, most of all the excellent work done by “your share the newspaper man”… 😀
Haha Thanks, Drake. 🙂
Lovely images!
Thanks, Cindy. 🙂
What stunning images; a brilliant take on the theme. Wishing you a lovely weekend and a joyous Father’s Day to your hubby.😊
Thanks so much, Cocoa. xx
Super interpreation S. Might even have inspired me on the Italuan theme. Um. Just realised. Me here, photo there! Oh well.
Ignore the brill spelling 😀
Thanks so much, Cate. I’m sure there will be other chances for you to use your absent photos. 🙂
I was thinking about the leaning tower of Pisa actually and the dome on the same piazza. Hence the illiterate italianate comment.
I could lend you a couple of photos of those. 😀
Nooooo! I love mine. Some of my best ones back in proper photo time. That’s why they are in my album. In Spain. Hey but post yours as a Curves 2. I’ll miss it anyway.
