Floral Friday: Lily Of The Incas

I love having these colourful Inca lilies to greet my visitors and our local supermarket always has them in abundance. This beautiful flower also known as Alstroemeria and Peruvian Lily, originates from South America and was introduced to Europe in the 18th century by Swedish botanist Baron von Alstroemer.

Six Word Saturday: Get The Measure Of This One!

Peering out through my kitchen window yesterday, I spotted Alli-baba cruising by. Oh my, how he’s grown since I last saw him!

I read that one can gauge the length of an alligator by guessing (or somehow actually measuring) the distance between the tip of their nose to their eyes and then converting that measurement from inches to feet. Without going so far as to swim out there with my tape measure, I’m thinking this one is probably close to 15 feet. If any of you disagree with me, you are most welcome to measure for yourself. I’ll even fetch you from the airport. You’ll probably only need a one-way ticket.

Feathers On Friday: Bird On The Wire

Looking out of my window at breakfast, I saw this female Cardinal patiently waiting for her turn at the bird feeder. He husband was busy eating around the other side and as soon as he was finished, she flew on to have her share. (I had to take the photo through the screen cloth so as not to spook them.)

It brought back memories of my mom when my sister and I were children and how she always made sure to serve my dad first at dinner. I think it was to show that she respected and appreciated how hard he worked to provide for his family.

Is This The Same Guy?

This morning when I looked out of my window, I noticed one particular pelican sitting up in the trees and thought he looked rather familiar. I went in search of a painting I did a few years ago when I started taking art classes.

It was lurking in the back of my hall closet and sure enough, there he was.  He looks younger and a bit unfinished, but unmistakable don’t you think?

Silent Sunday: The Vigil

A Great Blue Heron standing guard over the remains of another one who had evidently met an untimely death. There were dozens of people on the boardwalk taking photos, but he seemed oblivious as he stood there absolutely motionless. I felt so sad for him, as he was obviously grieving and didn’t want to leave his mate. I wonder how long his vigil lasted.

What’s The Well-dressed Anhinga Wearing This Season?

Here we have Ms Annie anhinga modelling her stunning winter outfit. It presents an elegant and smooth profile with the cape completely closed.

For a more dramatic effect, the cape can be opened right up to show the magnificent placing of the feathers. This outfit can not only be worn in Florida’s sunny weather, but also if there’s a sudden downpour it’s totally water-resistant. In fact it’s so versatile that one can even swim in it.

New Year Resolutions From My Wild Florida Friends

Big Al says, “In the New Year, I’m going to keep my head above water and always have an eye out for a good opportunity.”

Tommy turtle says, ” My motto is, don’t hurry, be happy. Life isn’t a race. We all get there in the end.”

Mr GBH says, “I’m going to take some time out of each day to meditate and I refuse to stress about those things that I cannot control or change.”

Great Egret says, “When I choose to rise above the drama, the view is wonderful and the way forward becomes clearer.”

Woody wood stork says, “I always strive to have balance in my life. I stay calm and grounded whilst being totally focused on my goals.”

Grandpa Igasho is looking a bit dishevelled and rather concerned as he keeps a watch out for human predators from his safe perch high up in the trees. His New Year resolution is to always stay one step ahead of the opposition because you never know what their next move will be.

Last up but most important, Perry and Penny pelican say, “Whatever the question, always remember that love is the answer.”
