Yesterday, my darling Mom-in-law Kathleen celebrated her 107th birthday with her friends and the wonderful staff at the care home in England where she resides.
Since she turned 105, she now qualifies for a congratulations card from Queen Elizabeth every year.
As the care home is in strict lock down during this pandemic, no visitors are allowed, not even family. We did however call her on FaceTime and she chatted to her grandchildren and great grandchildren too. She had a wonderful tea party with a gorgeous birthday cake.
The sides were decorated with sugar- icing broccoli and carrots because when she is asked “What is the secret of your longevity?” she now replies, “I eat broccoli and carrots every day with my dinner.”
I can remember a few years ago that her answer used to be “Chocolate and red wine.”
What an inspiration she is to us all. She is always happy and positive when we call and understands why she can’t have family visits. I think she really misses her Scrabble games with a couple of friends who used to come every Friday afternoon, but she keeps herself entertained with her favourite TV programmes and loves taking part in the chair aerobics that the staff organise for the residents. I hope she continues in good health and that next year when this pesky Covid-19 is over, we’ll be able to visit her again.

Happy birthday to your dear sweet mother-in-law! She’s beautiful and elegant (as others have commented)! I can’t imagine being as graceful and endearing at that age, but she has inspired that as a new goal for me! Hahahaha
Much love! Grand post. ❤️🦋🌀
Thanks you for your kind wishes, Sheila. We can all aspire to be happy and healthy into a good old age. She really is amazing. ❤
WOWWWWWWWW!! She’s just so amazing!! Wish her a happy birthday for me and ask her when she switched from chocolate to veggies. I’m taking notes.
Thanks, Suzanne. I seem to remember it was sometime around her 105th birthday, so you’re okay for a few years yet. 😅
Whew!!!!!!
This post gave me goosebumps, Sylvia. Holy moly that is a really long time to live — 107 years!! I like that has an upbeat attitude, love the elegant party decorations and cake. Getting a card from QE2 is absolutely delightful. All this in the pandemic, too. Every photo is beautiful and sweet. Truly inspiring.
Thanks so much, Jet. Yes, 107 years is a long time to be on this earth. I wonder how much longer she’ll live for. She often says to us, “I ask myself what am I still doing here, but there’s nothing I can do about it, so I’ll enjoy it.” 😅
Happy Birthday!
(Amazing how many of her generation manage on their own for so long.)
She looks beautiful. What stories she must have to tell. Hope someone is writing them down.
Love her cake and that she credits carrots and broccoli
Thanks so much. She’s lived through so much history and is now living through this pandemic. Incredible!
How wonderful! Happy belated birthday to your mother-in-law!! What an amazing story, she’s is such an inspiration doing so well. Xx
Thank you so much to you all. She really is an inspiration. 🙂
Happy Birthday to her! What an amazing story! She looks great for 107…better than some in their 70’s & 80’s. I pray for all of you to be together again! Love this! 🙂
Thanks so much, Lisa. 😘
I told my hubby about her. His aunt lived to be 104 in New Orleans but passed away when she was moved to Houston just before Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Her mind was still sharp as a tack. 🙂
Happy birthday, Ms. Kathleen!
Thank you. She was so thrilled with all the good wishes. 😍
Happy 107th to your mother-in-law! She looks wonderful, and very happy!
Thanks so much, Lavinia. She is very happy. Chatted to her today and it was an uplifting experience as always. 😃
God Bless Her, she is amazing and an inspiration to us all.
Thanks so much, Karen. 🙂
She looks amazing and still walking around for 107! She is definitely an inspiration.
Thanks, Cathy. We just called her a few minutes ago and she was saying how much she enjoyed her birthday party. She’s such a star. 🙂
She looks absolutely fabulous for 87!
And absolutely miraculous for 107!
Pass me the broccoli and carrots, please!
Thanks, Nancy. She is a wonder, for sure. I hope hubby has her good genes. He can look after me in my dotage. 😀
Good plan!
I’ll go for the chocolate and red wine!!!! What a gem she is. ❤
Thanks, Gunta. Whatever it takes. 😀
What an inspiration she is! Doing chair aerobics and missing her Scrabble games! I love that she will get a card each year from the Queen. Very best wishes to this lovely lady. What a treat to have such positive and uplifting news.
Thanks for your good wishes, Sue. She’s still going strong and I’m sure will be around for her next royal birthday card. 🙂
Just so amazing. wow..
Thanks, Lisa. She’s a family treasure. 🙂
Belated happy 107th to your mother-in-law. She looks amazing! I do eat carrots and broccoli, though not every day, so maybe I’m in with a chance of living that long. Now tomatoes, if they bestow longevity, I’ll be laughing all the way to my centenary and beyond.
Thanks, Anabel. I don’t think she’s very keen on tomatoes, so you may want to rethink that. 😅
Amazing. Happy Birthday to Kathleen!
I am totally wowed! 🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂 x 5 + 2 = 107.
(based on that there are 3 candles on the cake)
Thanks so much, Resa. Not sure why there were so few candles on the cake. Maybe they thought that’s what she would manage to blow out and make three wishes. 🙂
😀 She’s very beutiful!
Wow, that’s amazing. Thanks for the photos. I appreciate all the masked faces and the beautiful cake!
Thanks for commenting, Jenny. Yes, those carers aren’t taking any chances with their precious old people. 🙂
You are an inspiration for us all! Happy Birthday Kathleen!
Thanks so much for your kind wishes, Eddie. 🙂
Such an inspiration for us all, she looks great. Carrots and broccoli it is then…. 🙂 Best wishes to your mum in law. A truly remarkable lady!
Thanks, Ute. Carrots and broccoli for sure. 😀

As we all are, Derrick. 🙂
What a marvel she is, Sylvia.
I agree, Tish. An amazing woman. 🙂
Wow, Sylvia, what an inspirational lady.
107. WOW.
How absolutely wonderful!
Thanks, Sue.
What a woman! Happy Birthday to her may she always be happy and healthy! What a wonderful celebration! Cheers to your MIL, Sylvia and to her fortunate family! xoxoxoxoxo
How marvellous! She loooks great, still standing and walking, and love the broccoli and carrots superseding red wine and chocolate!
Wishing Aunt Kathleen continued health and high spirits, chocolates and red wine (keep the veggies for dinner!) along with a happy birthday!
Thanks, Dries. She’s gone right off red wine and chocolates since she turned 105. Now when she gets chocolates, she hands them out to her kind carers. 🙂
best wishes and happy birthday to your Mom-in-law, Sylvia. what a blessing to be up and about at her age. she looks fabulous! hopefully, she will be joined by family in person next year. 🙂 🙂
Thanks so much, Lola. We all hope so too. xxx
Happy Birthday Kathleen! It’s such a joy to read a happy story. I love Kathleen’s cake. A lot of thought was put into giving her a very special day.
Thanks so much, Carol. Yes, the wonderful carers and office staff are so attentive and loving toward Kathleen. She’s so happy there.
Whoa. I don’t know what impresses me more – the fact that your MIL is 107 or that the queen doesn’t send cards until birthday 105. England must have some great longevity in their people.
She is currently the 107th oldest person in the UK. You get the Queen’s card at 100 and 105 and every year after.
She is still looking fabulous and I am so glad she’s doing well. What a fabulous cake 🎂 hope you get over to visit her again before too long.
Thanks, Jude. She had a great birthday. 😃
Oh how wonderful! She’s seen so much life and known so many people! What a sweetheart and so well loved and taken care of. An inspiration for sure!
Thanks so much, Mary Jo. She is a sweetheart. I’m so fortunate to have married her son.
Amazing!!! Happy the 107th to your mother. She looks great too!!!!
Thanks so much, YC. I agree that she looks wonderful.
Wow….I thought my mother-in-law was doing well at 94! What a lot of turbulent history she has lived through…. birthday greetings to her from Australia!
Thanks so much, Gerrie. Yes you’re so right about all the stuff she’s lived through. She seemed take everything in her stride and I’ve never seen her ruffled except for the first time when my parents were invited for Sunday lunch and she served the roast chicken with the plastic bag containing the giblets still inside it. 🤣
I can just imagine!
An extraordinary birthday for an exceptional lady, Ad. Blast this Covid business! 😦
Thanks, Jo. 😘 Yes indeed, blast this rotten Covid. 😳
Happy birthday, Kathleen!
Thanks so much, Frank. 😃
Oh my goodness happiest of birthdays!!! Chocolate and red wine! If that’s the secret then I’m covered 😉 Carrots and broccoli… well, I’ll work on that. 🙂
Thanks, MBH. Good luck with the change of diet. 😅
This is amazing to see that she is still so strong at her age.
Thanks, Colline. She’s been so lucky with her good genes.
She is GORGEOUS!!
Thanks, Pam.
That is just amazing! A happy birthday to her!! ❤

Congratulations for your ma
Thanks, Marylou. 🙂
I feel like I have just entered the grandest birthday celebration. Your mother-in-law is beautiful, gracious and elegant. I imagine her as a young woman ready to take on the rewards and challenges of life. She has seen many events and great change over her lifetime. Oh, the story she has lived. Thank you for sharing her with us, Sylvia.
Thanks so much, Rebecca. She has lived a very good life. I consider myself blessed to have her in my life.
I especially enjoyed her thoughts on playing the piano. I still chuckle when I think about it. Hugs!
She always asks Chris how his piano playing is coming along. There is a piano in the home, so when we eventually get to visit her, I’ll suggest he plays something for her and her friends. 🙂
That would be so special for her!!!
Wow! How wonderful! Congratulations to your mom-in-law. 🎂Yes, I hope you’re able to visit her soon.
Thanks so much, Lynette. 🙂
WOW. She looks so good and still is standing and walking. I can’t even imagine the changes she has witnessed in her life.
Thanks so much, Cee. She is amazing especially for her age. It’s only recently that she’s been using a walker and until a couple of years ago, was living by herself in a two storey house.
She must be an amazing person. 😀
When I saw your post on FB yesterday, I had hoped you would blog about the big day. Happy birthday! I loved reading this, Sylvia. I thought I remembered her answer of red wine and chocolate…LOL! She looks great! I love that she receives a card from Queen Elizabeth!
Thanks, so much, Jill. I received the photos this morning, so was happy to share them. I’m so proud of her. 🙂
❤
Happy birthday NANA!!
Thank you. 🙂
Thank you. 😃

Thank you for the love. 🙂
