One Word Sunday: Spectacle

Debbie’s ‘One Word Sunday -Spectacle’, immediately brought this photo to mind. Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca citadel in Southern Peru and after it’s discovery by Hiram Bingham in July 1911, it became one of the ‘New 7 Wonders Of The World’. It is most certainly a stunning spectacle to behold and to explore and I was very happy to be able to cross it off my Bucket List.

I hope you’re all having a most enjoyable weekend. Yesterday, Ali Baba our resident alligator came cruising past our kitchen window. Now there’s another spectacle for you, but he’d unfortunately disappeared again before I could grab my camera and go out to wish him a very good morning.

  1. I can tell by your header photo that this is one of your favorite spots. Consider yourself lucky to have visited it. Did you have to climb to get that shot? Or did you have a drone??? Inquiring minds want to know.

      • Good to know. I do not do well in high altitudes. I’ve often wondered if goats might not be the answer to “raking” our forests. Our biggest problem is drought, but our climate also produces massive amounts of scrubby brush that allows the fires to climb into the crowns of the trees that are normally adapted to smaller, less intense fire. Can’t think of anything that might be as efficient as goats to keep that brush under control. I doubt if there is enough manpower in the world to subdue our undergrowth with rakes. 😉

  3. Sylvia – this photo is beyond fabulous. You capture the beauty and power of the Incas. I have never been to Machu Picchu and now with Covid19 it will be a long time before we venture forth internationally. The next best thing to being there “in person” is through a book. I read an extraordinary book by Kim MacQuarrie “The Last Days of the Incas”. He wrote: “The Incas’ genius— like that of the Romans—lay in their masterful organizational abilities. Amazingly, an ethnic group that probably never exceeded 100,000 individuals was able to regulate the activities of roughly ten million people. This was in spite of the fact that the empire’s citizens spoke more than seven hundred local languages and were distributed among 2,500 miles of some of the most rugged and diverse terrain on earth.” Thank you for this photo, which is of National Geographic quality. I feel that I was there with you.

    • Thanks so much, Rebecca. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have visited this amazing place when we did. We stayed two nights in a local hotel and went up to the citadel on both days. It was an unforgettable experience. They certainly were an awesome people. The facts you quote from Kim MacQuarrie’s book are quite mind-boggling. I’m so happy you loved the photo. 🤗

      • Every time I stop by your place, you take me on the best adventures. Yes, you were very fortunate to visit Machu Picchu – I understand that this site was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide internet poll.
