I was really surprised to look out of my bathroom window and see this new visitor to my backyard. The Black-crowned Night Heron is usually nocturnal, so its appearance at around midday was most unexpected. It’s the first time I’ve seen one of these and I had to consult my ‘Birds Of South East Florida Guide’ to identify it.

We have our family visiting from New Jersey at the moment and are having a great time together. It’s been well over a year since we saw them, so it’s very special to spend precious time together. Wishing you all a great weekend.
How very nice to be able to spend time with some of your family. It is not surprising that the heron made an appearance. Word is getting around the bird world that if they stop by, you will make them famous.
Thanks so much, Karen. The family visit went by far to quickly, we we take what we can get. Yes, my bird visitors are so excited to be famous π
This is really amazing visitor, I loved as much as my cat visitors. Thank you dear Sylvia, Much Love, nia
Thanks so much, dear Nia. Much love to you too.
Woohoo what a great visitor and capture, Sylvia! π€ π€
Thanks, Donna.
That certainly is an amazing catch! The Night Heron is usually quite shy, too. You must have some special magic to bring it in for such a lovely portrait! So good to get to visit with family again, isn’t it. We’re looking forward to seeing the grandkids next month! They grow far too fast to let entire years slip by without seeing them.
Thanks, Gunta. I think he just wanted to feature on my blog along with his buddies. π The grandchildren certainly had grown a lot snd it was fun to watch Max doing tricks on his skate board. They were quite impressed that granddad could play the piano for them. π
I hope you had a fantastic and special weekend, Sylvia. And, such a special bird. It must be amazing to have a bathroom window like that, looking at different species every day.
Thanks, Liesbet. Our family came for ten days, so we had lots of fun times together. π
That heron is a beauty!
Thanks, Lavinia. I wonder whether he’ll ever show up again. I was so lucky to see him.
So beautiful – he looks so wise! Have a happy weekend, Ex
Thanks so much, Emma.
Precious memories created at every moment.
Sometimes smiles come without warning, enjoy them!
Thanks, Eddie. Yes, lots of smiles and laughter. π
π
Goodness, Sylvia. That bathroom window is acquiring magic abilities – threshold to unexpected bird sightings. Fabulous photo. Happy family gathering!
Thanks, so much, Tish. π

Perhaps the Night Heron stowed away in the luggage of the family from NJ!
Have a lekker time kuiering with the family this weekend, Sylvia!
Thanks so much, Dries. We really enjoyed having our family here. It was a lot of fun. π
He is very handsome and doesn’t look at all confused by the time of day. I hope you’re having a lovely weekend with your family.
Thanks, Carol. We had a great time with the family visiting for over a week. π
Have a wonderful visit with your family!
Love the night heron. Great shot.
Thanks so much, Nancy.
Your Black Crown Night Heron looks very sparky for a bird who has probably been up all night.π
…isnβt it lovely to have family visiting again…we had our whole family here for Easterβ and it is great to have everyone chatting & the kids playing in the garden again. Enjoy, it has been a long time for you.ππ
Thanks, Gerrie. Yes, it was so wonderful to all be together again. It’s been such a long time.
What a treat. Kind of reminds me of seeing raccoons wandering around in midday – what’s up with that? Enjoy your family time.
Thanks, Dave. We did have a lovely time with the family. π
I’m happy to read that you’re having great family time, Sylvia. Maybe this heron is visiting from the Preserve. We see lots of them here. Have a wonderful weekend.
janet
Thanks, Janet. We had such a great time with the family. The house seems very quiet without them all.
Yes it’s a beauty and real unusual
Thanks, Marylou.
Isn’t he a beautiful boy? Strange that he was up during the day – maybe a case of insomnia. π
Thanks, Lynette. He looked pretty wide awake for an insomniac. π
What a handsome and sleek bird – bird identification books are so helpful at times like this. Great photo!
Thanks so much, Meg, Yes, my bird identification book is always handy. π
Well… Time to reconnect as a family
Thanks so much. It definitely was time. It had been far too long.
He looks quite handsome for his night career π
Thanks, YC. Yes, very dapper indeed. π
How wonderful that you are having your special visit. So happy for you. Perhaps the heron came by to celebrate.
Thanks, Sue. It certainly was a celebration and our son had his birthday with us too. π
What a great sight, Sylvia!
Thanks, Sue. π

Enjoy your time with your family! The Black-crowned Night Heron is lovely!
Thanks, Aletta.
How lovely to have a new avian visitor and family visitors too. Have fun with all your visitors, Sylvia.
Thanks, jet. We did have lots of fun. π
He’s lovely, happy weekend to you too, Sylvia. xx
Thanks so much, Ally. π
My pleasure, Sylvia. π
Are you still allowed to mix with others and have people visit indoors? I heard the infections were still rising over there.
Enjoy seeing your family, itβs been a long and difficult year. π
Yes, it has been a very difficult year. We had a wonderful time together. We don’t have the same restrictions here as you do in England and our family think that they all had the virus last year. We’ve both been vaccinated, so weren’t worried about having them visit. They’re going to quarantine when they return home, just in case.
It must have been so lovely to see them after such a long gap. At least mine are close by and we’ve had doorsteps visits.
Yes, it was a real treat.
Maybe his battery died in his watch. Beautiful bird! Enjoy your time with the family, Sylvia. I know you’re happy!
Thanks so much, Jill. Yes, I was so happy to see the family again after such a long time apart. π
Enjoy your family time together, itβs the best thing
Thanks, Alison. Yes, it was wonderful to see the family. We had lots of fun times. π
That is great to see a Night Heron in the day in your backyard. It must have woken up really late in the night…and is ‘staying up late’ π Or he was waiting to have his photo taken by you, Jo, an amazing bird photographer. Enjoy the family time and hope you all have a fun time together
Thanks so much, Mabel. We certainly did have a great family time together. I’m sure the night heron had heard that he could feature on my blog if he showed up in the daytime. π
I remember seeing pictures of other visitors to your yard. This one looks friendly. IIRC …. some visitors didn’t look so friendly. π¦ π
Yesterday, I spotted a not so friendly visitor lazing around at the bottom of our neighbor’s backyard next to the water. π―
Better you than me. π¦
precious moments with family! enjoy and happy for you dear Sylvia. your unusual visitor is quite lovely π π
Thanks so much, dear Lola. π
