Feathers On Friday: An Unusual Visitor

I was really surprised to look out of my bathroom window and see this new visitor to my backyard. The Black-crowned Night Heron is usually nocturnal, so its appearance at around midday was most unexpected. It’s the first time I’ve seen one of these and I had to consult my ‘Birds Of South East Florida Guide’ to identify it.

We have our family visiting from New Jersey at the moment and are having a great time together. It’s been well over a year since we saw them, so it’s very special to spend precious time together. Wishing you all a great weekend.

  1. How very nice to be able to spend time with some of your family. It is not surprising that the heron made an appearance. Word is getting around the bird world that if they stop by, you will make them famous.

  2. That certainly is an amazing catch! The Night Heron is usually quite shy, too. You must have some special magic to bring it in for such a lovely portrait! So good to get to visit with family again, isn’t it. We’re looking forward to seeing the grandkids next month! They grow far too fast to let entire years slip by without seeing them.

    • Thanks, Gunta. I think he just wanted to feature on my blog along with his buddies. πŸ˜… The grandchildren certainly had grown a lot snd it was fun to watch Max doing tricks on his skate board. They were quite impressed that granddad could play the piano for them. πŸ˜€

  3. Your Black Crown Night Heron looks very sparky for a bird who has probably been up all night.😁
…isn’t it lovely to have family visiting again…we had our whole family here for Easter’ and it is great to have everyone chatting & the kids playing in the garden again. Enjoy, it has been a long time for you.🌞😊

  4. Are you still allowed to mix with others and have people visit indoors? I heard the infections were still rising over there.

Enjoy seeing your family, it’s been a long and difficult year. πŸ™‚

  5. That is great to see a Night Heron in the day in your backyard. It must have woken up really late in the night…and is ‘staying up late’ πŸ˜€ Or he was waiting to have his photo taken by you, Jo, an amazing bird photographer. Enjoy the family time and hope you all have a fun time together
