Feathers On Friday: Exquisite In White

Seen at our local wildlife reserve. Mr Great Egret puts on a courtship display to attract the ladies.

These long feather plumes are called aigrettes and in the early 1900’s, because of their especially beautiful long feathers, these birds were almost hunted to extinction when their feathers were required to adorn ladies’ hats. Happily, this terrible practice motivated bird lovers to organise the protection of these and other threatened birds, resulting in the creation of some of America’s first bird protection societies.

Wishing you all a pleasant and relaxing weekend.
