Five Photos, Five Stories #5: A Walk in the Black Forest

Elaine of  ‘I used to be indecisive’ blog, has nominated me to do the ‘5 Photos, 5 Stories’ challenge. My final photo was taken in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park in Germany.

Almost two years ago, to celebrate her 100th birthday, my Mom-in law treated her immediate family to a Rhine cruise. When our ship docked in Breisach, we set out for a half hour mini-hike through the picturesque landscape of the Black Forest. After passing mountain goats grazing amongst the rocks, the trail became quite steep and the ground underfoot, very rocky, so we left MiL sitting on a large boulder in the shade of a viaduct, whilst the rest of us climbed to the top. The bronze statue of a stag overlooking the ravine, is a reminder that such an animal once escaped hunters with a gigantic leap across the gorge. I don’t know whether it’s a true story or just a legend, but the statue is really amazing to see.

At this point, I’m supposed to nominate another blogger to take up the challenge, but haven’t had much success so far with this, so I’ll leave it open for any of you who may like to  do it. The challenge is quite simply to “post a photo each day for five consecutive days and attach a story to the photo. It can be fiction or non-fiction, a poem or a short paragraph and each day nominate another blogger for the challenge”.

  1. How long did it take you to reach the top? This is an area that I have been planning on visiting some time in the future. I love the scene you captured, Sylvia.

  2. How amazing and beautiful, I thought it was a real stag at first! Love the story, really fires up the imagination. I’ve really enjoyed your series Sylvia, well done! Have a lovely weekend, now that you can look forward to your trip 🙂 xx

  3. First a 100 B-day celebration is something to treasure and loved the way she treated the family! Very cool ~ the statue has that wow factor being so high up and prominent. Great ending for the challenge Sylvia!

  4. How wonderful that your Mum in law was capable of doing a Rhine cruise and even nicer to take you all for company. Loved the stag and the legend. I’ve put this ramble on my list to do should we return to the Black Forest at any point. 🙂

  5. Lovely shot of that impressive statue! How wonderful it would be to capture a picture of the real thing in such a pose – but I suppose that would need incredible luck and timing.

  6. Somehow the idea of a walk through the “Black Forest” sounds intimidating. But I’m sure it was quite picturesque and an amazing experience.
    Outstanding image too! 🙂

    • Thanks, Phil. Apparently it was called “Silva Nigra”….. (The Black Forest), by the Romans, when it was still dense, dark and almost impenetrable. Today it’s a really beautiful place to go hiking, and not scary at all. Glad you enjoyed the image. 🙂

  7. I can imagine your MIL had a great time chatting to passers by! I didn’t have much luck passing this challenge on either, a pity it’s been a really good one 🙂

  8. love the story, Sylvia and what a great shot! how wonderful of your MIL to have the family go on a cruise! great way to celebrate the gift of life! 🙂

  9. What a wonderful way for her to celebrate her 100th!!! birthday. I wonder if I’ll still be climbing or cruising (or breathing) at that milestone

  10. At that point I would have been sitting with MiL… even though the goat is bronze just looking at it makes me dizzy.

    • I was really sorry that we had to leave MiL on her own for a while, but she didn’t mind at all, and when we got back to her, she told us that she’d chatted to many people who had passed by her. I’m sure she told them she was 100-years-old. 🙂

  11. Oh isn’t he marvellous standing there surveying his *kingdom Sylvia ! I’m willing to believe the story 😀
